Once again, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (Pictured) and reigning middleweight king Anderson Silva will look to get mixed martial arts off the ESPY snide. Jones and Silva have received nominations in the “Best Fighter” category for 2013.
Both superstars have been up for the award in the past – Silva in 2009 and 2012 and Jones has been nominated every year since 2011.
This year’s other nominees include boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr., Canelo Alvarez and Danny Garcia.
Mayweather captured the trophy in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012.
Jones and Silva each fought twice last year. “Bones” posted a unanimous decision victory over Rashad Evans at UFC 145 and followed up by submitting Vitor Belfort in September.
“The Spider,” meanwhile, TKO’d Chael Sonnen in the most anticipated rematch in MMA history last July and stepped in on short notice to steamroll Stephan Bonnar three months later.
Randy Couture, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Lyoto Machida and Georges St-Pierre (three times) are other MMA fighters who have received nominations in the past.
Could this finally be the year a mixed martial artist takes the trophy?
