No, we’re not talking about the television ratings for “UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen,” because the reported 1.78 million viewers who tuned in Saturday night is considered a “smash hit” for the UFC and Fox Sports 1 in most circles.

We’re referring to the upsetting results that took place in half of the card’s 12 scraps. Six underdogs served up upset specials this weekend, including Travis Browne (+180) and Chael Sonnen (+110), who competed in the event’s two showcase fights, and the night’s biggest longshot, John Howard.

Alistair Overeem (pictured) appeared to be well on his way to collecting a vicious TKO victory until Browne unleashed a front kick to the face that would have made Anderson Silva proud (or should we say, make Sensei Seagal proud?).

Sonnen was initially favored against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, but became the underdog when the late money rolled in on Shogun. Sonnen’s guillotine choke proved the Gambling Gods were correct with their original lines.

Uriah Hall was a significant 4.5-to-1 odds-on favorite to get his hype train back on track by steamrolling Howard (+325). Unfortunately for Hall, his high-five and handshake fest resulted in a disappointing split decision defeat.

James Vick (+150), Steven Siler (+160) and Michael Johnson (+200) were the show’s other dark horses to pull through.

As the old adage goes, anything can happen in a fight. That’s what makes MMA, particularly betting on MMA, so exciting.
