UFC Welterweight Carlos Condit

During Thursday’s UFC 171 conference call, former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit (pictured) revealed he will earn next dibs status with a win over Tyron Woodley in the March 15 event.

According to Condit, UFC brass have informed him that he will get first crack at either Johny Hendricks or Robbie Lawler, who battle for the vacant 170-pound crown that same evening inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, if he’s able to dispose of the former Strikeforce star.

Condit also confirmed during today’s call that he accepted a rematch with quasi-retired Nick Diaz at UFC 171, but Diaz declined the scrap. If that sequel would have come to fruition, I’m curious if the #1 contender stakes would have been the same for both fighters.

If Condit advances to a title tango, it would mark his third championship affair in his past six outings. He captured the interim crown by beating Diaz at UFC 143, then lost in a title unification bout to then-champ Georges St-Pierre in his next contest.

“The Natural Born Killer” proceeded to drop a top contender match Hendricks, but managed to snap his two-fight skid in August by avenging his 2009 split decision defeat to Martin Kampmann with a vicious TKO beatdown.
