After weeks of speculation, the UFC announced Monday afternoon that former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell will face Rashad Evans at UFC 88. This will be the organizations first ever event held in Atlanta, Georgia, and is scheduled to take place at the Phillips Arena on September 6th.
This will be Liddell’s first fight this year, as he is coming off of his victory against Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79 last December. A victory against up-and-coming and undefeated Rashad Evans will certainly put Liddell right back in title contention.
Evans will also be making his debut for 2008, as he last defeated Michael Bisping via unanimous decision at UFC 78 in November.
These two were initially scheduled to face each other earlier this month at UFC 85, however Liddell was forced to withdraw due to a pulled hamstring. James Irvin stepped in to replace Liddell, however broke his foot just weeks before the bout. Instead of trying to find a last minute replacement to take on Evans, the UFC decided to pull him off of the card entirely.
This is an extremely important fight for both men as a win would place them on the doorstep to face either current UFC Champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson or his challenger, Forrest Grffin, who are set to fight for the belt next month at UFC 86.
