Strikeforce and Showtime announced during the week that the two would be extending their agreement. It was also learned that once the heavyweight grand prix is done, there would be one more heavyweight bout before the division is removed altogether.

Chael Sonnen was also in true form during a short interview discussing his upcoming bout with buddy Mark Munoz at UFC on FOX 2.

Enough talk, onto this past week’s top news:

Interview with Nick Newell [MMAMania]

“I don’t have the same reach-around for a grip so when I actually do get a grip on you, it’s that much tighter but it is harder for me to get it because I have to reach further.”

Chael Sonnen on Mark Munoz and TUF [TheFightNerd]

“I want easy fights. I might even go to 205 just because that division is so bad, I might go down to 170. But 185 middleweight is far and away the toughest division in the sport. I’ll look for some easy matches, but there are only so many Wanderlei Silva’s out there.”

The best Gina Carano photo of all time? [CagePotato]

“Actress/fighter Gina Carano is featured in the January 2012 issue of GQ, plugging her movie Haywire, and we’re finding it hard to concentrate on anything else today.”

Exclusive interview with Ovince St. Preux [Lowkick]

“It’s definitely safe to say that Mousasi is the biggest name I fought in my career.”

Sean Sherk detained in the U.K. [Fightline]

RYU is UFC’s newest sponsor [MMAPayout]

“The Portland Business Journal reports that Respect Your Universe, Inc.(RYU) has struck a deal with the UFC to become an official event sponsor. Fans of MMA will begin seeing the name and logo of the clothing company based out of Portland, Oregon beginning at UFC 141.”

Jon Jones’ undue reach advantage [BleacherReport]

“Some even preach the ridiculous view that Jones’ height and reach advantage is the only thing going for him—that if it weren’t for those poles stretching out of his shoulders and hips, he wouldn’t be where he is today.”

Strikeforce and Showtime come to an agreement [MMAConvert]

“Under the new agreement, SHOWTIME will produce and televise up to eight live events. STRIKEFORCE athletes such as lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez.”

Strikeforce to eliminate heavyweight division in 2012 [MMAFighting]

“The big men aren’t long for Strikeforce, as the promotion will finish out its Heavyweight Grand Prix and soon afterward, eliminate the division in order to focus on its remaining weight classes.”

TUF’s Johnny Bedford returns in January [Five Ounces of Pain]

“Eddie Wineland did not have to wait long to find out his next opponent, as the featherweight will meet Johnny Bedford at UFC on FOX 2.”

Female grappler chokes out a guy [MiddleEasy]

“Today I discovered menwrestlingwomen.blogspot.com, and I can confirm for you with absolute certainty that it is not porn.”

People would hate Jon Jones if he were white [FightOpinion]

“This is not a new charge from the Sherdog personality. However, he certainly stepped up the theory since Jones won big over Lyoto Machida at UFC 140 in Toronto and did the ESPN ‘car wash’ of interviews/TV shows on Tuesday.”
