MMAJunkie.com is reporting that Jake Shields will finally get his shot at a title on EliteXC’s second CBS event. The 170-pounder has been patiently waiting for the organization to put their first ever Welterweight title up for grabs. The event is scheduled to take place July 26th, possibly in St. Louis, Missouri.
Shields has been a consensus Top Ten Welterweight in the world for quite some time, however has never been in a title fight, let alone a champion for a major organization. Shields (20-4-1) was scheduled to take on former UFC fighter Drew Fickett a few months back, but due to his back injury was forced to pull out.
“Obviously I haven’t fought in a while. I got injured before my last fight and had to pull out, which is not something I wanted to do,” said Shields.
He now feels confident that the injury is behind him and is ready to take his place amongst the best fighters in the world.
“I’m 100 percent,” Shields emphatically stated. “I was struggling with it (his back injury) for a while, a lot longer than I wanted, and it took me a few months to get 100 percent, but I did the right things and now I am. And, I’m more motivated than ever.”
Fickett is scheduled to take on Ryan Ford for the Maximum Fighting Championship’s 170-pound title on July 25th, so this rematch will have to wait for another time.
There are two possible opponents for Shields: Nick Thompson (36-9-1) or Jay Hieron (15-4). Both are worthy opponents, but EliteXC Management has not confirmed which of the two is more deserving of getting the title shot.
Either way, look for Shields to unleash years of frustration while he waited for this time to finally come. And don’t look for his reign to end anytime soon.
“I’m ready to do some big things this year and next year,” stated a confident Shields.
