As the old adage goes, timing is everything. A day after the planet’s most imposing female fighter flunked her drug test and was stripped of her featherweight crown, Strikeforce officially announced the biggest bout currently available in women’s MMA.
During Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine” broadcast, Showtime announcers confirmed Miesha Tate (Pictured) will make her first bantamweight title defense against Ronda Rousey on March 3rd.
Tate served up an upset special over Marloes Coenen last July to capture the crown. The submission victory marked “Takedown’s” sixth consecutive win.
Speaking of taking fights to the canvas, Rousey has exploded out of the mixed martial arts gates by winning her first four scraps via armbar. In addition to her skills inside the hexagon, the tapout specialist’s willingness to incite verbal warfare has added much spice to women’s MMA.
While little is known about the event, the trusty rumor mill is suggesting the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio will host the show. The finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier is expected to headline the festivities.
Showtime will broadcast the card’s main bouts.
Here are the athletes expected to appear in the event:
K.J. Noons vs. Josh Thomson
Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate (Strikeforce Bantamweight Champion)
Heavyweight Grand Prix Finals:
Josh Barnett vs. Daniel Cormier
