Earlier this month, it was reported professional wrestling superstar CM Punk was going to escort Chael Sonnen (Pictured) to the Octagon when he faced Mark Munoz at “UFC on FOX.” Upon further consideration, it appears WWE chairman Vince McMahon has slammed the breaks on the maneuver.

According to FrontRowBrian, which was later confirmed by MMAFighting, McMahon decided it wasn’t a good idea for his employee to be a member of Sonnen’s entourage on January 28th. Punk was not going to corner the self-proclaimed “UFC middleweight champion” in his top contender scrap, simply walk Sonnen down the aisle.

It is believed the talented mic men become close friends over the last several months. Punk is an avid follower of MMA, while many think Sonnen could be the most successful mixed martial artist to crossover into the world of fake fighting.

The news could possibly be a blessing in disguise for Sonnen, as Punk’s participation may have served as more of a distraction than as a motivator.

The UFC’s return to primetime television takes place inside United Center in Chicago, Illinois. The 185-pound affair co-headlines the show.
