Sherdog.com has confirmed that Thomas Denny will be taking on Nick Diaz on EliteXC’s second CBS event, which is scheduled to take place July 26th. In addition to this announcement, EliteXC has also confirmed that the event will take place at the Stockton Arena, in Stockton, California, which happens to be Diaz’s hometown.
The two 160-pound fighters will be joining a star studded cast, which is already headlined by two title bouts. Yesterday, EliteXC confirmed that top ranked welterweight Jake Shields will finally get his opportunity to fight for a major title, as he will be taking on Nick Thompson for the vacant EliteXC Welterweight belt.
In addition, the event will be headlined by the Middleweight title rematch between Champion Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith. The two fought just last month on EliteXC’s first CBS promotion, however the bout was ruled a No Contest after Smith took a finger to the eye and doctors ruled that he couldn’t continue.
On Monday, Diaz’s camp confirmed that EliteXC management forced him to pull off of the Dream.5 card, which is scheduled to take place July 21st, where he was to face Hayato “Mach” Sakurai. Once word got out that the second CBS event might take place in Stockton, fans immediately assumed that was the reason why EliteXC wanted Diaz off the Dream.5 card.
It was initially thought that Diaz might be taking on bitter rival KJ Noons for the EliteXC Lightweight title on this card, however with yesterday’s announcement of the Shields/Thompson bout, three title fights on one event might have been a little too much. It was wise for EliteXC to save that title match to headline another night.
