According to Las Vegas Review-Journal, UFC heavyweight top contender Alistair Overeem (Pictured) has been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery following an incident in a Las Vegas, Nevada casino after his UFC 141 victory over Brock Lesnar.
The former Strikeforce champion was issued a citation by the LVPD at around 3AM on January 2nd for reportedly pushing or shoving a woman in the face, “causing her to stagger back.”
“Alistair was not arrested, but was summoned to court,” said David Chesnoff, Overeem’s defense attorney. “There are two sides to this story and we intend on vigorously defending this. Alistair maintains his innocence.”
Overeem is scheduled to appear in court on February 21st. If convicted, “The Demolition Man” faces a maximum of six months in county jail and a maximum $1,000 fine.
Overeem successfully made his big league debut on December 30th by retiring Lesnar and advancing to challenge reigning heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos for his crown.
The UFC has yet to issue a statement regarding the controversy.
