Josh “The Punk” Thomson (14-2) is ready to face off against his former training partner Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez (14-1) in tonight’s Strikeforce main event which will be shown on HDNet. Thomson though is coming back only five months after undergoing surgery on a torn labrum in his shoulder. “I was really hoping to avoid a fight with Gilbert my first fight back,” he said.
Unfortunately, a title shot and a chance to quiet all the doubters is all he’s going to get. For a guy with an impressive fighting resume as Thomson’s, he doesn’t have the same name recognition as Gilbert Melendez, but many argue that his wins over guys like Duane Ludwig, Rob McCullough and Hermes Franca should’ve gotten him in the limelight a long time ago.
He’s fought in the UFC before, suffering a knockout loss to Yves Edwards and getting a decision over Franca. Thomson is content with just fighting though. “I don’t need a gold belt strapped around my waist. I’ve been able to make a living at something I enjoy,” Thomson told Sherdog.com.
It’s fighters like Thomson that make the sport what it is today and whether he likes it or not, today’s his chance to get a gold belt strapped around his waist.
