Exactly 24 hours after Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker reported Derek Brunson had failed his pre-fight medicals and would be forced out of his scrap against Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (Pictured), Coker announced Bristol Marunde has agreed to serve as a last-minute substitute to meet Jacare on March 3rd.
Jacare owns a respectable 14-3 (1 NC) record, with 11 of his victories coming via submission. The Brazilian had won four straight scraps prior to losing his middleweight crown to Luke Rockhold last September.
Marunde makes his Strikeforce debut riding a four-fight winning streak. He has rattled off victories in nine of his past 10 contests.
The 185-pound affair will serve as one of the show’s five featured bouts on the main card.
Brunson revealed Tuesday afternoon that a failed eye exam was the reason he couldn’t obtain clearance. He is expected to undergo Lasik surgery to rectify the problem.
Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio hosts the event. A bantamweight title bout between champion Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey headlines the festivities.
Showtime will broadcast the main card at 10PM ET/PT.
