It took the UFC a while to come around, but now that the flyweight division is officially set to launch tonight in Australia, Joseph Benavidez (Pictured) is ready to take the 125 pound division by storm with his lightning quicks.

“Now that I’ve cut weight, I know this is the right weight for me,” Benavidez stated. “Being able to go through a camp at this weight, I noticed the difference in my speed. I gained a focus that I didn’t have at 135 pounds. I was fast at 135 pounds, but at 125 pounds I am going to be extremely fast.

“I feel faster and it’s going to make for a dangerous fighter [tonight].”

While speed has always been one of his greatest assets, Benavidez believes the UFC’s new weight class will allow him to showcase his entire repertoire. On the flipside, that same advantage will apply for every other 125-pounder so the division could prove to be the organization’s most thrilling.

“In the flyweight division you won’t see guys throwing one big punch, but [fighting] complete MMA at a very fast pace,” Benavidez added. “I think this is going to be the UFC’s most unpredictable division.”

Benavidez is an early favorite to take the tournament and be the first to don the UFC flyweight title. He’s a whopping 10-to-1 odds-on favorite to dispose of Yasuhiro Urushitani tonight and advance to the tourney’s finals later this summer.

“UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann” takes place inside Allphones Arena in Sydney. The main card airs live in North America at 9PM ET/6PM PT.
