Just minutes before the curtain was drawn on “Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey,” the organization announced their Heavyweight Grand Prix will finally conclude on May 19th.
Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier (Pictured) will meet in the tournament finals. Strikeforce was unable to confirm which venue will host the festivities.
Showtime will broadcast the card.
Barnett easily submitted Sergei Kharitonov last September to advance to the championship round. Cormier, a tourney replacement, put Antonio Silva to sleep that same evening to secure his spot in the finals.
Unfortunately for Cormier, he broke his right hand in the victory and has been on the mend ever since. His wounded haymaker is the reason the tournament has been delayed.
The contest will mark the second-to-last heavyweight affair under Strikeforce’s banner. The victor is expected to fight one more time against a “top tier” 265-pounder before the organization erases the division.
Most of Strikeforce’s best heavyweights have already transitioned over to the UFC, including Fabricio Werdum, Shawn Jordan and Lavar Johnson.
