It’s spring season, so you know what that means – tree pollen and its friends will be driving airborne allergen levels through the roof. UFC heavyweight Pat Barry (Pictured) claims his allergies will directly affect his performance against Lavar Johnson on Cinco de Mayo.
“Lavar and I are both allergic to jiu-jitsu,” Barry stated during at Tuesday’s press conference. “That’s a fact. We’re also allergic to rounds two and three. Will we see a lot of beginner-level wrestling and grappling on [May] 5th? Most likely not.”
Johnson, who made quite the splash in his big league debut by putting Joey Beltran to sleep with a vicious barrage of uppercuts, echoed the same sentiment.
“Pat’s a tough fighter. I feel I match up very well with him,” Johnson expressed. “He’s not looking to go to the ground. I’m not either. I’m trying to come up and try and smash him and make it happen.”
Of Barry’s seven professional mixed martial arts victories, six have come via some form of knockout. Fourteen of Johnson’s 16 wins have ended in the same fashion.
Being one of the shorter competitors in the heavyweight division, Barry will once against enter the Octagon with a significant height disadvantage. However, his five-inch differential against Johnson isn’t the only area where “HD” feels inferior.
“Lavar Johnson has beyond heavy hands,” Barry said. “The dude’s fists are the size of my head. I think we’re going to do our damndest to punch each other a lot.”
You know what they say about guys with big hands … they wear big MMA gloves.
The 265-pound shootout goes down inside IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. FOX will broadcast the main card live at 8PM ET/5PM PT.
