It is being reported by Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports that Dana White and the UFC are considering merging the WEC’s Middleweight and Light Heavyweight divisions into the UFC and keeping the lighter weight classes in the WEC. This is a move that has been rumored in the past, but this time Dana White himself spoke to Iole about the possibility.
The only sure-fire contender that would be able to compete for a belt right away would be current WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho, but unfortunately both he and Anderson Silva train with each other and have stated in the past that they wouldn’t fight one another.
Outside of that, the Light Heavyweight division in the UFC is already stacked, and adding a guy like Brian Stann would help, but it doesn’t change the landscape whatsoever.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens, but the move makes sense as the WEC is known for its Lightweight and Featherweight divisions and an improving Bantamweight class.
