Do you know the way to San Jose? Well, the finals of Strikeforce’s Heavyweight Grand Prix does. It was confirmed Friday afternoon the HP Pavilion in California will host the May 19th event.
Tickets for the show go on sale April 6th at 1PM ET/10AM PT via Ticketmaster.
Josh Barnett (Pictured) and Daniel Cormier will headline the festivities by meeting in the tourney finals. The contest marks the second-to-last heavyweight affair under Strikeforce’s banner. The victor is expected to fight one more time against a “top tier” 265-pounder before the organization erases the division.
Barnett easily submitted Sergei Kharitonov last September to advance to the championship round. Cormier put Antonio Silva to sleep that same evening to secure his spot in the finals.
Unfortunately for Cormier, he broke his right hand in the win and has been on the mend ever since. His wounded haymaker is the reason the tournament has been delayed.
Barnett vs. Cormier is the only scrap reported for the roster thus far, though Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez previously suggested he would also appear in the extravaganza.
Showtime will broadcast the card’s main bouts at 10PM ET/PT.
