Strikeforce has been fairly quiet on the mixed martial arts front for the past several weeks, so the UFC’s little brother decided to unleash a slew of announcements for their May 19th event. As expected, HP Pavilion in San Jose, California will host “Strikeforce: Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament Final.”
“Strikeforce is coming back to where it all started – San Jose,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. “The Bay Area has some of the best fight fans in the world and we can’t wait to get back with an event like this.”
Josh Barnett (Pictured) and Daniel Cormier will headline the festivities by meeting in the tourney finals. The contest marks the second-to-last heavyweight affair under Strikeforce’s banner. The victor is expected to fight one more time against a “top tier” 265-pounder before the organization erases the division.
Lightweight king Gilbert Melendez completes his trilogy against Josh Thomson in the night’s co-featured contest. Each 155-pounder holds a unanimous decision victory over the other.
The organization also confirmed a welterweight tilt between Bobby Voelker and Nah-Shon Burrell, as well as a light heavyweight affair with Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante and Mike Kyle for the lineup.
Gian Villante is expected to meet fellow 205-pounder Derrick Mehmen in San Jose, though the scrap has yet-to-be confirmed.
Showtime Extreme airs the preliminary bouts at 8PM ET/PT, while Showtime will broadcast the main card at 10PM ET/PT.
