The UFC is bringing Sexyama back. Despite posting four consecutive big league losses, Yoshihiro Akiyama will return to the Octagon and face Thiago Alves (Pictured) on July 21st at UFC 149.
The organization confirmed the welterweight affair on FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight.”
After taking a razor-thin split decision victory over Alan Belcher in his 2009 promotional debut, Akiyama went on to suffer defeats to Chris Leben, Michael Bisping, Vitor Belfort and Jake Shields, respectively.
It seemed as though “Sexyama’s” job was in serious jeopardy after losing at UFC 144 in front of his hometown peeps, but it appears the veteran has been granted a reprieve.
Alves is looking to rebound from a disappointing submission loss to Martin Kampmann. After dominating much of their standup affair, the former top contender inexplicably attempted a takedown in the closing seconds of their shootout and found himself on the wrong end of a Hail Mary.
UFC 149 takes place inside Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Featherweight king Jose Aldo will defend his throne against a yet-to-be determined opponent in the night’s featured attraction.
Here are the athletes expected to appear in the show:
Jose Aldo (UFC Featherweight Champion) vs. TBD
Mitch Clarke vs. Anton Kuivanen
Bryan Caraway vs. Mitch Gagnon
Court McGee vs. Nick Ring
Thiago Alves vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
