‘UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

“UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans” took place Saturday night inside Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones defended his title against former teammate Rashad Evans in the show’s featured attraction. A welterweight affair between skyrocketing star Rory MacDonald and Che Mills served as the co-main event.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Marcus Brimage Defeated Maximo Blanco via Split Decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: After much jousting, Brimage charges ahead and scores with a right hand and knee to the midsection. Blanco tosses him to the mat for a brief second. Not many strikes thrown, let alone connected, by either fighter. Brimage, 10-9.

2ndRound: Blanco connects on a front kick and follows up with a one-two combination. Brimage answers with a knee to the body that briefly floored Blanco – it may have been a slip. Blanco tags him with a right hook. And another right hook. Blanco, 10-9.

3rdRound: Brimage takes his legs out with a leg kick. Blanco fails on a takedown attempt. Brimage rushes forward and connects with a flurry. Crowd starts to boo due to inactivity. Another close frame to score, but Brimage is the more active fighter. Brimage, 10-9, and wins the bout, 29-28.

Both featherweights raise their hands in victory after the final horn sounds. Then they start imitating each other’s back flips. Strange…

Chris Clements Defeated Keith Wisniewski via Split Decision (28-29, 29-28, 30-27)

1stRound: Wisniewski gets a body lock and drags him to the ground. He immediately moves to side control. Wisniewski drops an elbow that cuts Clements. He advances to full mount. Wisniewski now takes his back. Referee inexplicably stands them up. Clements folds him over with a spinning back kick to the midsection. Clements, 10-9.

2ndRound: Wisniewski trips him to the mat and lands in side control. Clements wall walks to his feet. He nails Wisniewski with a big right hand. Clements eats a front kick to the face in return. Clements clocks him with a right and follows up with another back kick to the stomach. Wisniewski plants him on the ground and takes his back. He’s attempting a rear-naked choke. Although he’s caught in a body triangle, Clements clobbers him with some back elbows. Clements, 10-9.

3rdRound: Wisniewski immediately goes for a takedown, but Clements does a solid job of fighting him off. Clements nails him with a big right hand and left hook. He connects with another spinning back kick to the body. Wisniewski is just eating all of these shots with no problem. Clements unleashes a spinning back fist and knee to the grill that floors Wisniewski. Clements, 10-9, and sweeps the scorecards, 30-27.


Mac Danzig Defeated Efrain Escudero via Unanimous Decision (30-27-28, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: They exchange knees to the body while in the clinch. Danzig trips him to the canvas, but Escudero attempts a leg lock. Danzig spins free. They are both landing their fair share of shots, but Danzig is controlling the action. Escudero thwarts a takedown attempt. Danzig, 10-9.

2ndRound: Danzig has him pressed against the fence. Escudero scores with a couple of punches. Not too much action and the crowd starts to boo. Escudero connects on a few knees to the midsection. Escudero, 10-9.

3rdRound: Danzig winning the standup battle early in the final stanza. He has him clinched against the cage. Certainly not the most thrilling scrap in Octagon history… Danzig, 10-9, and takes the contest, 29-28.

Anthony Njokuani Defeated John Makdessi via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Njokuani unloading several powerful kicks. Njokuani wobbles him with a left hand. Makdessi appears to have recovered. Njokuani tags him with a head kick. Njokuani, 10-9.

2ndRound: The opening three minutes of this frame is similar to the previous five – Njokuani winning the kicking battle. The crowd really expressing their displeasure as the horn sounds. Njokuani, 10-9.

3rdRound: Makdessi’s lead leg is really bruised up. Boos coming raining down. Makdessi scores his first significant points on a spinning back fist. Njokuani unloads a nice combo of punches and kicks. Njokuani, 10-9, and takes the uneventful bout, 30-27.

Matt Brown Defeated Stephen Thompson via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Brown working hard for a takedown and finally trips him to the ground. Thompson using his long legs to fend him off and manages to get to his feet. Brown drags him back down and attempts a calf crank. Thompson wiggles free and ends up on top. Brown, 10-9.

2ndRound: Brown dives in for a takedown and lands it for a brief moment. He has Thompson clinched against the fence. Thompson gets free and is unleashing a barrage of strikes. Brown is taking all of them, so it may be only a matter of time. Brown cracks him with an elbow out of nowhere and drops his opponent. Brown cuts him with two short elbows on the mat. Some more vicious ground-and-pound. Brown, 10-9.

3rdRound: Thompson eats an early punch. Both fighters appear exhausted. Thompson comes back with a flurry and tags Brown with several punches. Brown trips him to the ground and advances to side control. He gets a mounted triangle and is blasting him in the head. Brown, 10-9, and sweeps the cards, 30-27.

Travis Browne Defeated Chad Griggs via Submission (Arm Triangle Choke) at 2:29 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Browne takes him down and advances to full mount and locks in an arm triangle choke. Griggs has no choice but to cry uncle.

Mark Bocek Defeated John Alessio via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

1stRound: Bocek has him clinched against the cage and finally trips him to the canvas. He’s unloading several short elbows to the dome. Bocek swings around to his back and is attempting a rear-naked choke. Bocek, 10-9.

2ndRound: Alessio clocks him with a one-two combination. Bocek takes him to the ground and is working an efficient ground-and-pound. Alessio lands a left hook as he gets to his feet. Bocek, 10-9.

3rdRound: Alessio scores on a powerful leg kick and follows up with a left hand. Bocek gets him down and takes his back. He has secured a body triangle. Alessio fights to his feet and tags him with a front kick to the face. Bocek, 10-9.

Eddie Yagin Defeated Mark Hominick via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Yagin is a significant underdog, but is doing a solid job of staying with Hominick. He drops Hominick with a big left hook and pounces. Hominick gets to his feet, though has a cut above his right eye. Yagin, 10-9.

2ndRound: Yagin floors him again and goes in for the kill. His speed is really killing Hominick. The Canadian’s eyes are busted up – his right is bloodied and his left is swelling fast. They are back to their feet. Yagin is pouring blood from his nose. Hominick connects on a left hook to the body. Yagin, 10-9.

3rdRound: Hominick looks much more comfortable on his feet, but he can’t seem to score more than one shot at a time. Yagin eats two straight punches to the face. Now some more. It looked like he was in some trouble, but it might be too little too late for Hominick. Hominick, 10-9, but Yagin’s early performance sealed the deal, 29-28.

Michael McDonald Defeated Miguel Torres via KO (Pictured) at 3:18 in the 1stRound

1stRound: McDonald charges forward with a flurry. He scored with some punches, but Torres did a solid job of avoiding any major damage. He drops the former WEC champ with a vicious uppercut and pounces. McDonald unleashes a few unnecessary punches on the ground, but Torres was already unconscious.

Ben Rothwell Defeated Brendan Schaub via TKO (Punches) at 1:10 in the 1stRound

1stRound: They are flinging the leather early. Rothwell connects with a couple of knees to the midsection while in the clinch. Schaub tags him with a spinning back elbow that stuns him. Rothwell answers back with a left hook that puts him down and out. Schaub is totally dazed and confused as referee Herb Dean pulls Rothwell off him. It’s a wrap.

Rory MacDonald Defeated Che Mills via TKO (Punches) at 2:20 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Mills tags him with a couple of solid leg kicks to start things off. He follows up with a right hand. Rory secures a takedown, but ate a big uppercut in the process. Vicious ground-and-pound by MacDonald. He cuts Mills open with a right bomb. The Canadian advances to a mounted crucifix. MacDonald moves to full mount, now takes his back and is bringing the pain. MacDonald, 10-9.

2ndRound: Mills has a golf ball growing on his right cheek. MacDonald takes him down with the greatest of ease and immediately moves to side control. The youngster now advances to full mount. Mills give up his back. MacDonald is giving him the business. Game. Set. Match, MacDonald.

Jon Jones Defeated Rashad Evans via Unanimous Decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45) (Jones retains UFC light heavyweight title)

1stRound: Herb Dean is the third man in the Octagon. No eye contact from Jones during the stare-down. Surprisingly, they touch gloves. They both crouch down before the war starts. Jones tags him with a head kick. Evans scores on a one-two combo. Jones counters with a powerful leg kick. The champ lands a straight elbow and follows up with a left hook. Jones hits him with two consecutive kicks to the body. Evans clocks him with a nasty head kick. Jones, 10-9.

2ndRound: Evans scores with two knees in the clinch. Jones responds with a leg kick. He misses on a barrage and Evans takes the opportunity to showboat. Jones connects on an elbow, but eats a leg kick. “Bones” staggers him with another elbow shot. Jones is throwing elbows like they are punches, absolutely sick. He unleashes a flying knee and a left hook just before the horn blares. Jones, 10-9.

3rdRound: Evans appears to have recovered. He clocks Jones with a big left. Jones just misses with a vicious head kick. Jones throws a flying knee and follows up with a one-two combo. Evans counters with a left hook. Jones connects with a switch kick. “Suga” attempts his first takedown to no avail. Jones, 10-9.

4thRound: Not too much going on in the opening three minutes of this stanza. Evans goes for a takedown and gets punished with a couple of shots to the dome. Jones nails him again with an elbow. Evans thwarts a takedown attempt. Jones, 10-9.

5thRound: Evans needs to go for broke, but will he risk getting put to sleep by his nemesis? Evans lands a nice leg kick, though he’s going to need more than that. Jones clobbers him with a right and then a kick to the midsection. Evans eats a knee to the chin. Jones trips him to the mat and unleashed a couple of strikes before Evans was able to get to his feet. Jones, 10-9, and runs the table, 50-45.
