The injury bug strikes again. Just minutes after assigning Roy Nelson a new opponent for UFC 146, the organization announced Jamie Varner (Pictured) will replace a wounded Evan Dunham to face Edson Barboza in the May 26th festivities.
Despite donning the WEC lightweight title, Varner was not transitioned to the UFC after Zuffa, LLC shut the organization down in December 2010. Varner defended his strap twice before losing to now-current UFC champion Benson Henderson.
Since that time, Varner has bounced around several smaller promotions to win three of his last four fights. The 27-year-old most recently picked up back-to-back victories in the XFC by posting 1stRound finishes over Nate Jolly and Drew Fickett.
Barboza is perfect through his first ten professional scraps, with seven of his wins coming via some form of knockout. Speaking of lights out, the Brazilian was last seen posterizing Terry Etim at UFC 142 with a highlight-reel spinning wheel kick.
