Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has only suffered a deep bone bruise in his left leg. He sustained the injury during the 2ndRound of his battle against Forrest Griffin at UFC 86 this past weekend. Rampage will take this week off to rest and heal and is expected back in the gym Monday.
In the beginning moments of the 2ndRound, Griffin landed a kick to what appeared to be Rampage’s left knee, which caused him to buckle. After having his knee examined today, it was revealed that it was actually Rampage’s shin that absorbed the punishment.
At the time, it seemed as though the injury might be more severe, since Rampage was unable to apply pressure on it in the 3rdRound. It did seem to loosen up for him in the 4th and 5thRounds, however, he was clearly favoring it as he limped from the Octagon back to his dressing room after the fight.
He was cleared by doctors to resume training next week, although, he will have to avoid any direct contact to the lower part of the leg, as it is still very tender.
“After the fight, he had a knot the size of a cantaloupe on his shin,” Jackson’s trainer, Juanito Ibarra, told MMAjunkie. “I’ve never seen anything like it in all the years I’ve been in the fight game. It was ugly. The next day it went down. Today, there’s no bump at all. The doctor said he’s fine. It’s a deep bone bruise now. He’s totally fine. There’s no damage. All we’re waiting for now is the rematch.”
Much like Rampage’s leg, they will have to wait on that as well.
