Although it took Strikeforce several grueling months to iron out an extension with Showtime, which merely resulted in a guaranteed eight-event, 12-month agreement, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker (Pictured) believes his partnership with their longtime broadcast buddies will last far beyond this December’s deadline.
Many believe Zuffa, LLC, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce, are counting down the days until they can collapse the smaller promotion – particularly since they are on the cusp of erasing the heavyweight class from Strikeforce and their website hasn’t functioned properly in countless weeks. However, Strikeforce.com is finally up and running again (albeit looking eerily similar to UFC.com) and Coker claims ridding themselves of their 265-pounders was a mutual decision.
“The heavyweight division, they all agreed that there wasn’t going to be enough athletes to support both [UFC and Strikeforce] and they wanted to bring some of the fights over there at that time,” Coker shared during Thursday’s conference call. “But now that the Showtime relationship has been renewed and it’s been solid, I think you’re going to see those great fights on the lighter weights – starting with light heavyweight on down in Strikeforce.”
Coker believes focusing on scraps under 205lbs. and showcasing women’s mixed martial artists, particularly skyrocketing superstar Ronda Rousey, Strikeforce is in a position to move the needle more than enough to warrant another extension with Showtime.
“We have a great relationship with Showtime, I think we have provided great fights with great ratings. I think you’ll continue to see Strikeforce on Showtime for many years to come.”
Strikeforce hosts the second show on their agreement on May 19th. They announced their third card will take place on July 14th in Portland, Oregon. The rumor mill is suggesting an August event featuring Rousey is also in the works.
