After Josh Koscheck’s win over an aging Frank Trigg at UFC 103, he used his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan to push for a fight against former welterweight champion Matt Hughes. And the future UFC Hall of Famer’s response to being called out? “I have no interest in fighting Koscheck and, as he was showing everybody, he’s just a kid,” said Hughes.
Koscheck is definitely on the cusp of contending for a title. Two more solid wins should justify that, while Hughes is undoubtedly in the latter stages of his career, and that’s what got so many old school MMAers upset.
Why would Kos call out a legend that is clearly exiting the sport, while he’s headed in the opposite direction? Is he just looking to add a big name to his resume even though Hughes isn’t the fighter he was a few years back? Is Kos trying to make Hughes into the welterweight division’s Ken Shamrock?
“I find Koscheck calling me out kind of interesting and I actually don’t know why he is doing that,” Hughes continued on his official website.
Posting a win over Hughes would certainly be a significant notch on Kos’ belt, however it really doesn’t put him any closer to a title bout. Either way, Hughes will just be waiting for his phone to ring.
“As of yet, the UFC has never come to me and asked me to fight him,” Hughes said in closing.
