Junior dos Santos (Pictured) doesn’t pull any punches inside the Octagon, and the reigning UFC heavyweight champ sticks to that same mentality outside of it. When “Cigano” was recently asked what he thought of his May 26th opponent, dos Santos professed Frank Mir doesn’t have heart.
During Thursday’s conference call, the Brazilian was requested to clarify his comments just in case something was lost in translation. It wasn’t. Dos Santos is a straight shooter and reiterated that Mir is the Tin Man of mixed martial arts.
“I don’t promote fights by talking trash,” dos Santos stated. “What I say, I say because I believe it. I confirm and I stand by what I said. What I meant by that remark is that I feel that Frank Mir lacks heart and lacks the ability to proceed through rough spots in a fight.
“That’s my personal opinion. That’s what I truly believe. I don’t say things just to sell fights. I’m not a trash talker, I never will be. So if I said it, it’s because it’s my true opinion.”
Prior to dos Santos’ analysis, Mir wasn’t known for drowning when taken into deep waters. The former two-time champion bounced back from a horrific 2004 motorcycle accident to reclaim the throne (albeit an interim title) just four years later. In addition, he was completely dazed and confused in his last outing, but managed to rally and snap Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira’s right arm in two.
Speaking of Big Nog, dos Santos is affiliated with Team Nogueira. Perhaps trying to avenge his mentor’s loss makes this fight a tad more personal.
Dos Santos will have the opportunity to test out his theory firsthand when the 265-pounders collide at UFC 146 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
