TMZ.com was the place to be on Saturday morning. Shortly after reporting UFC president Dana White had recently received death threats, the celebrity gossip website revealed reigning UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones (Pictured) was arrested for DUI early Saturday morning in New York.
According to the report, Jones was involved in an accident at around 5AM in Binghamton. The 24-year-old rammed his ride into a pole and was arrested on the spot.
The skyrocketing superstar was taken into custody by the Broome County Sheriff’s department and was bailed out a few hours later by his mother.
“I can confirm that Jon Jones was arrested early this morning on suspicion of DUI,” Jones’ representatives expressed in a statement. “While the facts of this situation are still being gathered and situated, First Round Management fully supports Jon and we are asking for fans and media to respect the privacy of Jon and his family during this time.”
For his last fight against Rashad Evans, Jones became the first athlete in UFC history to be sponsored by the organization. Ironically, Jones boasted that his propensity to stay out of trouble was a factor in the company’s decision to make the unprecedented move.
“I’m glad the UFC wanted to work with me,” Jones stated at the time. “I think they trust that I will never make them look bad. You never have to worry about me getting a DWI or doing something crazy. I think I’m a good company guy.”
