“Affliction: Banned” Results

The heavyweights really lived up to the hype as the main card saw a couple of knockouts and a submission. See if former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia was able to be the guy to beat Fedor Emelianenko, or would he come up short? Andrei Arlovski also looked to proved the critics wrong against a very tough Ben Rothwell and Josh Barnett wanted to avenge his loss to Pedro Rizzo. Check out the results!

Paul Buentello vs. Gary Goodrich

1stRound:

Buentello comes out very aggressively, catching Goodrich with a couple of nice jabs. He is able to clinch Goodrich and is landing knees and kicks to Goodrich’s face, at will.

Goodrich seems content on just throwing leg kicks, some are landing and making a violent smack throughout the arena. Buentello fires back with a barrage of strikes in the clinch, and knees once again. That last flurry may have secured him the round.

Buentello is winning the battle in the clinch, landing all the knees he wants.

5thRound Scores the Round: 10-9 Buentello

2ndRound:

Goodrich throws a nice kick to Buentello’s body, however Buentello is able to catch Goodrich in the clinch again and land some nice elbows and knees. Goodrich fires back with some nice punches of his own.

Goodrich clearly wants to keep Buentello at a distance, primarily not to get caught in Buentello’s clinch, as he continues to use leg kicks on Buentello. Both fighters land some nice strikes in a brief flurry, tough to say who got the best of the exchange.

Both fighters’ hands look sharp, Buentello once again gets Goodrich in trouble as he lands strike after strike in the clinch. Close round, but Buentello landed more, particularly in the clinch.

5thRound Scores the Round: 10-9 Buentello

3rdRound:

Buentello gets Goodrich in the clinch again and is able to land some short shots. Not much activity from the fighters, although they both look fresh.

Goodrich continues to land leg kicks, but they are not as deadly as they were earlier in the fight. Goodrich tries a homerun right, but misses. Buentello is firing back, and appears to have Goodrich in some trouble. He has Goodrich clinched in the corner, but is unable to finish.

Goodrich is swinging for the fences as he might be sensing that he can’t allow this fight to go the scorecards. Buentello continues to attack, and lands three nice knees to Goodrich’s midsection. Buentello wins the fight, walking away.

Paul Buentello Defeats Gary Goodrich via Unanimous Decision (30-27, All three Judges)

Terry Martin vs. Vetor Belfort

1stRound:

Martin takes the center of the ring, as both fighters exchange jabs. Belfort lands a left kick to Martin’s head, but didn’t seem to hurt him too badly. Belfort lands a couple of nice jabs as he is content with letting Martin pace the fight, and come after him.

Belfort has Martin clinched up in the corner, Martin lands a nice right to Belfort’s face. Another nice right by Martin. Martin doing a good job of throwing combinations, while Belfort is in counter punching mode.

Belfort lands a nice combination and a flurry of jabs at the end of the round. Martin fires back with a straight right. Tough round to score.

5thRound Scores the Round: 10-9 Martin

2ndRound:

Martin comes out aggressively, however Belfort is able to land solid jabs to keep Martin off balance. Belfort lands a nice left kick to Martin’s midsection, Martin counters with a nice right of his own. Martin is able to catch one of Belfort’s kicks and takes the Brazilian down.

Belfort is controlling Martin in his full guard, Martin not doing much to advance his position or inflict damage. Belfort scrambles back to his feet. Martin continues to take it to Belfort and controls the center of the ring.

Belfort lands a flying knee to Martin’s face and follows that up with a right-left comination to Martin’s face, sending him into the ropes. The fight is stopped.

“Affliction Banned” – Play-by-Play

J.J. Ambrose vs. Mike Pyle

1stRound:

Not much activity to start out as the two fighters jockey for better under hook position in the corner of the ring. Pyle is able to take Ambrose down and land in a dominate side mount position. Pyle is able to take Ambrose’s back immediately.

Pyle continues to go for rear-naked choke attempts, and punches the side of Ambrose’s head to soften him up. Pyle finally secures the choke and the fight is stopped. Dominating win for Pyle.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Edwin Dewees

1stRound:

Nogueira takes the center of the ring, as both fighters exchange kicks. Dewees tries a fancy kick combination, but comes up empty. Nogueira is controlling the pace of the fight and is throwing fast combinations of strikes, however none are doing too much damage.

Dewees is able to clinch Nogueira in the corner of the ring, but inflicts no damage. Nogueira is able to take Dewees down and is throwing some powerful strikes in the full guard. Dewees is doing a solid job of defending, and Nogueira steps out of the guard to get the fight back standing. Nogueira lands a vicious knee to Dewees’ midsection and follows it up with some nice combinations.

Nogueira then lands another knee to the same spot on Dewees, and then goes in for the finish with a flurry of punches, eventually dropping Dewees. After a few more punches on the ground, the fight is stopped.

Fabio Negao vs. Matt Lindland

1stRound:

Lindland lands a left immediately to Negao’s face and drops him. Lindland goes in for the kill and attempts a guillotine choke in top position. Negao tries to scramble, but rolls right back into the same position.

Negao is able to fight off the choke and get Lindland into his full guard. Lindland is relentless in his attack regardless, even throwing a double hammer fist to Negao’s face. Negao is finally able to wiggle out, as Lindland lands a knee to Negao in the clinch.

Both fighters exchange shots in the center of the ring, none doing much damage.

5thRound Scores the Round: 10-9 Lindland

2ndRound:

Lindland takes the center of the ring, however Negao is landing a barrage of shots to Lindland’s face. The two fighters slug it out in the corner of the ring, as both land some nice shots.

The fighters clinch and Lindland reverses Negao into the corner and is able to take him down. Lindland has advanced to half guard, however has yet to land any solid punches. Lindland lands two nice elbows and is slowly turning it on.

As he did in the 1stRound, Lindland stands over Negao and flies down with a punch. Lindland has done a solid job of maintaining top position and pinning Negao in the corner of the ring.

5thRound Scores the Round: 10-9 Lindland

Lindland is once again on the attack, however neither fighter is doing much to start the round. Negao gets Lindland in a weak standing guillotine attempt, however Lindland is able to get out.

Lindland is active, still throwing combinations, however they don’t have the same snap as they did earlier in the fight. Both fighters slug it out in the center of the ring, but nothing too exciting.

Lindland goes for a shoot, however Negao is able to ward him off. Lindland goes for another takedown, however the fighters fall through the ropes and they start the fight standing. Lindland lands a nice right to Negao’s face. He follows it up with a couple nice jabs as they clinch against the ropes. The fight comes to an end in a fairly slow moving round.

Matt Lindland Defeats Fabio Negao via Unanimous Decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27)

Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Mike Whitehead

1stRound:

Both fighters come out swinging, as they exchange shots in the center of the ring. Babalu lands two nice kicks to Whitehead’s left leg. Not much activity between the two fighters, however Babalu is able to land two consecutive jabs.

The two continue to fight for under hook position in the corner, they exchange knees, however the fans are getting restless and start to rain down boos as they ask for more action.

Babalu is able to get a takedown, however Whitehead stands right back up. Tough round to score since neither fighter did much. Babalu may have stolen the round due to the meaningless takedown.

5thRound Scores the Round: 10-9 Babalu

2ndRound:

Whitehead goes for a takedown, however Babalu is able to fend him off. The 2ndRound looks very similar to the 1st, as both fighters exchange knees while they clinch.

Babalu lands a nice right hook, but Whitehead was unfazed. Whitehead is finally able to wrestle Babalu to the mat, and he lands in his full guard.

Whitehead is not doing too much on the ground, a very conservative Lay ‘n Pray. Bablu did land a nice up kick, however it may have been illegal as Whitehead still had his knee on the mat. It was not called and the fighters continue on.

The Ref stands the fighters up due to inactivity, and Babalu goes for an exciting spinning back fist that comes up empty. Another close round, however Whitehead’s LnP may have won him the round.

5thRound Scores the Round: 10-9 Whitehead

3rdRound:

Babalu goes for a straight kick, however Whitehead catches it and rushed him for a takdown, but the fighters fall through the ropes and are forced to stand back up. Babalu is definitely coming out swinging this round, although hasn’t landed anything significant. He once again goes for a takedown, but is stuffed.

Babalu lands a kick to Whitehead’s side and as both fighters wrestle, they fall through the roes once again. Whitehead lands a nice right uppercut and tries to follow it up with a takedown, however Babalu goes for an immediate guillotine attempt.

Whitehead is able to escape and lands in Bablu’s full guard. Babalu is staying active on his back and goes for an omo plata attempt. Whitehead wiggles free and they are back to full guard.

The Ref stands them back up due to inactivity. The fighters clinch again against the roped and exchanges knees again. Babalu lands another strong right straight kick, which has worked fairly well for his this fight.Babalu attempts a fancy reverse spinning back kick that grazes Whitehead in the face. The fight comes to an end.

Renato “Babalu” Sobral Defeats Mike Whitehead via Unanimous Decision (30-27)

Savant Young vs. Mark Hominick

1stRound:

They both come out throwing, however nothing has landed. Young throws a Superman punch, which glances off Hominick’s face. Hominick lands a nice combination, as the two battle in kickboxing match.

Hominick lands a stiff jab and Young fires back with a flurry, but nothing lands. Hominick is the aggressor as he has chased Young down for much of the round.

Hominick tries a high kick that missed and Young lands a straight right hand pushing Hominick back. That is a tough round to score, niether fighter landed much.

5thRound Scores the Round: 10-9 Hominick

2ndRound:

Young lands a nice leg kick and goes in for the takedown. After a little bit of jostling, he is able to get Hominick to the mat, landing in full guard.

Young is active, throwing a variety of strikes, however, Hominick is keeping his hips moving and attempts a triangle choke. Young immediately picks Hominick up and slams him to the mat.

Hominick keeps throwing his legs over Young’s head and gets an arbar attpempt in. Young is able to get out, however Hominick once again almost catches him in a triangle.

Hominick is very aggressive on his back, going for one submission attempt after another and is able to finally catch Young in an armbar. The fight is stopped.

Pedro Rizzo vs. Josh Barnett

1stRound:

Both fighters exchange punches in the center of the ring, nothing significant lands. Barnett continues to throw straight front kicks and attempts a takedown, however Rizzo is able to fend him off.

Barnett attempts an exciting spinning back kick, however comes up dry. After much inactivity, Barnett finally lands a solid kick to Rizzo’s left thigh.

The fans start to boo due to the inactivity, and Barnett responds with another straight kick. Barnett goes for a clinch, but Rizzo fights him away. He throws a nice right-left combination into a leg kick, and this time also lands the spinning back kick to follow up.

5thRound Scores the Round:10-9 Barnett

2ndRound:

Barnett certainly is the more active of the two fighters, as Rizzo seems content to just counter punch. Rizzo has taken the center of the ring, however isn’t able to land much.

Barnett lands a vicious left hook Rizzo’s head and drops him immediately. Barnett follows up with a right to Rizzo’s face, but he is already out by the time he hits the mat, and the Ref steps in to stop the fight.

Josh Barnett Defeats Pedro Rizzo via TKO at 1:44 in the 2ndRound

Ben Rothwell vs. Andrei Arlovski

1stRound:

Rothwell comes out swinging, as Arlovski lands a leg kick. Another left leg kick that causes Rothwell to buckle a little. The two fighters clinch, but nothing comes of it. Another solid leg kick for Arlovski. Rothwell has Arlovski pinned in the corner, however Arlovski is able to sweep him and take him down.

Arlovski immediately transitions into a heel hook attempt, but Rothewell is able to escape and get the fight back standing.

Arlovski lands a flurry of shorts to Rothewell’s head, and another overhand right to top it off. Rothwell lands a nice right hand to end the round.

5thRound Scores the Round:10-9 Arlovski

2ndRound:

Rothwell comes out swinging again and lands a couple of solid shots. Arlovski counters back with a wicked barrage of punches and Rothewell is forced to cover up. After a few more shots, Arlovski takes Rothwell down and lands in full guard.

Rothwell has a cut over his right eye. Arlovski continues to pound on Rothewell, however Rothwell is able to escape and is now in top position. Rothwell lands two vicious right elbows to Arlovski’s face. After a slight break, he lands another.

After a lot of inactivity, the Ref stands the fighters up. Arlovski immediately goes in for the attack and hits Rothwell with another barrage of punches. He ended the round by landing a strong knee to Rothwell’s face.

5thRound Scores the Round:10-9 Arlovski

3rdRound:

Rothwell immediately goes for the clinch and pins Arlovski in the corner. Arlovski is able to seperate and starts to unload on Rothwell. He lands another barrage of punches, and drops Rothwell. The Ref immediately jumps in to stop the fight. It looked the vintage Arlovski tonight.

Andrei Arlovski Defeats Ben Rothwell via TKO at 1:13 in the 3rdRound

Tim Sylvia vs. Fedor Emelianenko

1stRound:

The two fighters come out slugging and Emelianenko gets the better of the exchange as he drops Sylvia with a left hook, then immediately pounces on him.

Sylvia is curled up in the fetal position as Emelianenko takes his back and rains down punches to the side of Sylvia’s head. Emelianenko is able to roll on his back and attempts to get Sylvia in a rear-naked choke. After some slight jostling, Sylvia is forced to tap.
