Here is the play-by-play from Faber vs. Barao:
Mario Yamasaki is the third man inside the Octagon. Faber charges forward and eats a couple of punches for his troubles. Barao grazes Faber’s face with a spinning back-kick. He follows up with another head kick. The Brazilian now scores on a knee to the midsection. Faber is having trouble closing the distance, especially because Barao is using kicks.
They are flinging the leather. Barao takes an accidental finger to the eye and time is called. Game on. Barao unleashes a flying knee and flurries. Faber is unfazed. Barao is landing more shots and is starting to damage Faber’s lead leg. “The California Kid” can’t seem to find his range.
Barao nails his lead leg again and follows up with a flurry. Faber attempts a takedown to no avail. Faber scores with a front kick and right hand combo. Faber answers with an uppercut. Barao connects with a straight right hand. He tags Faber’s lead leg again.
So far, each frame has been a mirror of the last. Faber needs to figure out how to cut the distance. Faber takes a finger to the eye and time is called. Game on. Barao punishes his body. Faber’s left thigh is starting to show some wear, not quite like what Jose Aldo did to it, though.
Faber needs a finish, but he’s not fighting like it. Nothing new to write, just read what happened in the previous four rounds. Barao appears to know he’s got this on lock and is cruising to the finish line. Easy for me to say, as Faber eats another vicious leg kick. The crowd is not happy.
Renan Barao Defeated Urijah Faber via Unanimous Decision (49-46, 50-45, 49-46) (Barao captures UFC interim bantamweight title)
