Urijah Faber may not have left Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary with the UFC interim bantamweight title, but “The California Kid” will be taking home a broken rib for his troubles.
A fractured bone certainly isn’t the best consolation prize, but sometimes that’s the price mixed martial artists have to pay for a shot at championship glory.
According to Faber, Renan Barao cracked his ribcage at some point during the opening round of their shootout. In true warrior fashion, Faber continued fighting and completed the 25-minute affair.
Unfortunately for Faber and the #NoShirtNation, Barao cruised to a lopsided unanimous decision victory at UFC 149 to capture the manufactured belt.
“Congrats 2 @RenanBaraoUFC. He’s a tough dude. Broke my rib in the 1st with a great knee. Thank u 4 all the support,” Faber tweeted Sunday morning accompanied with the above pic.
Faber’s last five losses have come in championship affairs. The 33-year-old hasn’t won a title bout since defending his WEC featherweight crown against Jens Pulver in June of 2008.
