UFC Light Heavyweight Mauricio Shogun Rua

Understanding the Octagon’s fourth foray on FOX isn’t generating much hoopla, UFC president Dana White has decided to raise the stakes. MMA’s big boss has announced a light heavyweight top contender will emerge from August 4th’s festivities.

According to White, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (Pictured) can solidify his next dibs status by posting an impressive win over Brandon Vera in the show’s featured attraction. However, if Vera serves up an upset special or Shogun is less than spectacular in victory, Lyoto Machida will earn the nod if he gives Ryan Bader the business in the night’s co-main event.

White and UFC matchmaker Joe Silva will determine which performance is more worthy of a shot at the 205-pound crown.

“These fighters have a huge opportunity to show the world why they deserve to fight for the UFC title next,” White told FOXSports.com. “Winning isn’t enough at UFC on FOX. This division is so competitive these fighters have to look great to separate themselves from the pack.

“I’m expecting all of these guys to go all-out to prove why they should be next in line for a title shot.”

Reigning light heavyweight king Jon Jones is set to defend his throne against Dan Henderson at UFC 151.

Jones holds convincing wins over both Shogun and Machida. “Bones” steamrolled Rua at UFC 128 to become the youngest champion in company history. He later choked “The Dragon” unconscious at UFC 140.

Henderson is coming off an instant classic unanimous decision victory over Shogun at UFC 139. Hendo has never faced Machida.
