Current UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, said that he will be defending his title against Patrick Cote next. He believes that the bout will take place in September, which coincides with what UFC President Dana White had previously stated. However, White initially said that top contender Yushin Okami would be the one facing the champ at UFC 89.

Silva stated that the change in opponents is because Okami has apparently broken his hand in training and will be forced to sit on the sidelines until it heals.

“We came to Los Angeles now and will help Rafael (Feijão) to prepare for his fight at Elite XC. After that, we’ll go back to train for my fight at September. I believe I’ll face Patrick Cote”, Silva told TATAME. “I haven’t seen that fight (Cote’s last win over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86). I’ll take a look at that.”

It took Silva all of 61 seconds to defeat James Irvin this past weekend at UFC Fight Night 14. It was Silva’s first fight in the light heavyweight division for the promotion, however he is more than prepared to fight again in two months to defend his middleweight title.

Cote may be feeling both lucky and unlucky at the same time. Due to Okami’s injury, he has now leapfrogged him as the top middleweight contender, however, now he actually has to fight the seemingly unbeatable Silva.
