Speed kills, but so does power. That’s why Joseph Benavidez (Pictured) isn’t fazed heading into the UFC flyweight finals against Demetrious Johnson and his fancy feet.
“I know where I’m better than him and I know where he has the advantages,” Benavidez stated. “He’s a speed fighter, a very active fighter. As far as power goes, you definitely gotta respect it, but that’s not something I’m gonna worry about.
“I’m going into the fight knowing I’m the powerful striker here. Of course I’d like to test his chin out. That’s the goal, to hurt him with every punch I’m gonna throw. Whether it be to the body or to the face, I’m looking to hurt him with every punch.”
Benavidez and “Mighty Mouse” meet at UFC 152 to become the Octagon’s first 125-pound king. Benavidez is pegged as a 3-to-1 odds-on favorite to capture the crown, but he’s not about to allow the Gambling Gods to fog his focus.
“The goal was to come [into the UFC] and be champion,” Benavidez shared. “Now it’s so close I can taste it, so there’s no way I’m going to let him take it away from me.
“I’m gonna be going forward the whole time, putting pressure on him. That’s when he seems to break. Thankfully, that’s what I’m good at, putting pressure on people.”
UFC 152 takes place September 22nd inside Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
