Word on the street is that a heavyweight clash between rising star Junior Dos Santos and Gabriel Gonzaga is set for UFC 108 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s possible the January 2nd fight could determine who might be next in line for a shot at the title, especially if dos Santos reigns supreme.
MMAWeekly.com confirmed with sources close to the situation that both fighters have agreed to the scrap and bout contracts should be signed and submitted shortly.
Dos Santos holds an impressive 10-1 pro record and was last seen embarrassing Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 103 in Dallas. The 25-year-old Brazilian overwhelmed the Croatian with his diversified striking, ultimately knocking CC senseless in the 3rdRound.
Gonzaga has made some grumblings about getting another shot at the UFC crown after losing to Randy Couture at UFC 74 in his only 5Round affair, however he hasn’t performed to the liking of UFC brass to warrant a mulligan.
Although he holds a 15-4 record, he is coming off a controversial W over UFC newcomer Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 102. Gonzaga earned a 1stRound TKO after he inadvertently kicked Tuchscherer’s groin, causing him to briefly lose consciousness. Tuchscherer was able to resume, however was clearly not the same fighter as Gonzaga teed-off on his dome.
Here are the fighters rumored to be competing inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena:
Cole Miller vs. Dan Lauzon
Joe Lauzon vs. Sam Stout
Junior Dos Santos vs. Gabe Gonzaga
Thiago Silva vs. Rashad Evans
Vitor Belfort vs. Anderson Silva (UFC Middleweight Champion)
