Dennis Hallman Misses Weight by a Mile, Fight with Thiago Tavares Canceled

UFC Dennis Hallman

For the second consecutive time, Dennis Hallman (Pictured) was packing far too many pounds when he tipped the scale. While the veteran missed weight by 2.5 pounds in his UFC 140 victory over John Makdessi, which caused the promotion to change the lightweight scrap to a 158.5 catchweight contest, Hallman was carrying seven extra pounds when he weighed in today.

Thiago Tavares could have agreed to keep their appointment, but ultimately – and understandably – decided his opponent would have far too much of a size advantage come Friday.

Lightweights can weigh as much as 156 pounds for non-title bouts. They must hit 155 pounds on the dot for championship affairs.

The UFC did not report whether Tavares would be paid his ‘show purse.’ In comparison to similar cases in the past, Tavares should receive his paycheck if he came in at the correct weight.

Prior to his last two forays to the scale, Hallman had been competing at welterweight. The 36-year-old fought at middleweight as recently as November 2007.

The two were slated to battle in a preliminary bout at “UFC on FX: Browne vs. Bigfoot.” The lightweight tango between Carlo Prater and Marcus LeVesseur was promoted to the FUEL TV broadcast in its place.

Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota hosts the festivities.
