Remember those less than flattering pictures of BJ Penn (Pictured) that surfaced on the Internet during UFC 148 weekend? How about what Rory MacDonald promised he would do to Penn if he didn’t enter their scrap in tip-top shape?
Well, Penn caught wind of MacDonald’s comments, put down his Big Mac, bolted out of McDonald’s and hooked up with his old trainers who helped him get a ripped six-pack back in 2007 when he throttled Jens Pulver, Joe Stevenson and Sean Sherk, respectively.
“We took my belly off,” Penn boasted during Tuesday’s conference call. “I actually started this training camp at probably 40 percent body fat, and I was just gonna get into shape a little, go in there and give it my best effort.
“But as things started going on, Rory ended up pulling out 10 weeks before [UFC 152] and he was saying he saw me and that I looked fat and he’ll probably end up killing me in the ring. That really lit a fire under my butt. I think I’m down under 10 percent [body fat] now.”
According to the American Council on Exercise, the average male athlete should have between 6-13 percent body fat. Any man containing over 25 percent body fat is considered obese.
Penn had just ended his early retirement to face MacDonald, so it’s understandable he wasn’t in great shape. But 40 PERCENT BODY FAT???
Anyway, the blubber is yesterday’s news and “The Prodigy” is strictly focused on MacDonald (no longer to be confused with McDonald’s). As a matter of fact, Penn’s next bout is the only thing on his mind – including whether he’ll re-retire should things not turn out so well in Seattle.
“I’m just focusing on this fight,” the 33-year-old added. “I got no more plans after this. Once I do have plans, I’ll call [UFC president Dana White] and we’ll talk at that point, but I have no plans after December 8th. My whole life is just into [MacDonald].
“I’m ready to go. I’m expecting the best BJ Penn that I’ve ever seen, so we’ll just see how this all plays out.”
