Although Urijah Faber (Pictured) will never consider reigning UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz his friend, there is a fraternity among fighters because only they understand what each other go through in order to step inside the cage.
For that reason, Faber sympathizes with Cruz and the troubles his archenemy is having with his surgically repaired left knee.
“I definitely feel for him,” Faber revealed on FUEL TV’s UFC Tonight. “When it comes down to the fact, the guy loves the sport, he works hard and there are a lot of admirable things about him.”
However, Faber does have an ulterior motive for wanting to see Cruz back in action. The bitter rivals are knotted up at one apiece and “The California Kid” would like to settle the score once and for all.
“I want him to heal up so I can beat him,” Faber added. “I’ve got to win a couple of fights against top dudes like Ivan Menjivar. Then I’ll be back in there again with him. I wish him a speedy recovery. I hate to hear it, really.”
Faber was just trounced by Renan Barao for the interim 135-pound crown. His last five losses have come in championship affairs.
Cruz, meanwhile, is staring another lengthy rehab dead in the eyes. The 27-year-old is expected to be sidelined for much of 2013 after undergoing a second operation on the same knee. Cruz hasn’t defended his throne since posting a unanimous decision win over Demetrious Johnson in October 2011.
