‘The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

UFC Poster TUF 16 Finale Nelson Mitrione

“The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale” took place Saturday inside The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A heavyweight scrap between replacement Matt Mitrione and Roy Nelson headlined Saturday’s show. “Big Country” was originally slated to face Shane Carwin in the event.

Nelson and Carwin coached opposite each other on this past season of The Ultimate Fighter.

In addition, Colton Smith and Mike Ricci met in the TUF 16 finals to score a six-figure UFC contract.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Preliminary Card:

Tim Elliott Defeated Jared Papazian via Unanimous Decision (30-25, 30-25, 30-26)

1stRound: Elliott nearly catches him in a standing guillotine choke following a clinch. Elliott ends up in top position after a brief scramble. Papazian manages to reverse, but gets caught in another guillotine choke. He fights free and unloads an illegal knee to Elliott’s dome while he’s still on the ground. Time is called. Elliott is dazed and confused. Game on. Elliott drops him with a straight right and pounces. He’s giving him the business on the canvas. Elliott moves to full mount and has two minutes to work. Papazian gets to his feet and lands a solid knee to the midsection. Elliott, 10-9.

2ndRound: Elliott wrestles him to the mat and lands in side control. A couple of short elbows causes Papazian’s nose to bleed. Elliott scores another takedown, though only for a brief moment. Papazian tags him with an uppercut and follows up with a head kick. Elliott plants him on his back once again just before the frame ends. Elliott, 10-9.

3rdRound: Papazian secures a takedown, but Elliott is going for a knee bar submission on the other end. The fighters get stood up. Elliott floors him with a punch and goes in for the kill. He’s smothering Papazian on the ground. Elliott advances to his back, now full mount. Papazian is getting schooled. Elliott, 10-9, and runs the table, 30-27.

Mike Rio Defeated John Cofer via Submission (Armbar) at 4:11 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Sharp hands early by Cofer. Rio tries to answer with a takedown. He has Cofer clinched against the fence. Cofer tags him with two straight lefts that stuns his opponent. Rio drags him to the ground. Cofer sweeps and ends up on top. Cofer, 10-9.

2ndRound: Rio comes out firing to start the middle stanza. Rio picks him up and slams him to the mat. Rio is standing over him and eats an upkick to the face. Cofer get to his feet and has him clinched against the cage. Rio lands a knee to to the stomach in the clinch. Rio plants him on his back and jumps on his back. He’s now piggybacking Cofer. Rio, 10-9.

3rdRound: A pair of solid left hands by Cofer. Rio easily takes him down and lands in half guard. Rio working for an armbar. Cofer wiggles loose. Rio slaps on another armbar. This one is much tighter and Cofer is forced to tap.

Hugo Viana Defeated Reuben Duran via TKO (Punches) at 4:05 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Viana clocks him with a big overhand left. He clobbers Duran with another left that drops him. Duran gets to his feet, but eats several more bombs for his troubles. He’s waving Viana on as though he’s not hurt. Yeah… Viana floors him with another vicious right hand. Duran gets back up, only to taste another right hand. Duran is planking on the canvas. It’s a wrap.


T.J. Waldburger Defeated Nick Catone via Submission (Triangle Choke) at 1:04 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Nothing more than a grappling match in the first half of the scrap. Catone drags him to the ground and lands a couple of shots. Waldburger gets to his feet, but Catone is hanging on his back. Waldburger pulls guard to try a kimuar, though eats several bombs for his troubles. Catone, 10-9.

2ndRound: Catone clocks him with a vicious right hand. He follows him to the mat and slaps on a guillotine choke. He switches to a triangle choke and unloads short elbows to the top of Waldburger’s head. Waldburger can’t tap because he’s already asleep.

Rustam Khabilov Defeated Vinc Pichel via KO (Suplex and Punches) at 2:15 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Khabilov drags him to the ground in less than a minute. Pichel tries to get to his feet, but Khabilov picks him up and slams him to the ground. He does it again. He’s tossing Pichel around like a rag doll. Another suplex and some bombs on the ground. Game. Set. Match, Khabilov.

Johnny Bedford Defeated Marcos Vinicius via TKO (Strikes) at 1:00 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Bedford immediately goes on the attack with a diversified array of strikes. Vinicius attempts a guillotine choke, but lets it go. Bedford is now in top position. Bedford allows him back up. Bedford’s really working his jab. Bedford tags him with a big right that drops the Brazilian. Bedford is bringing the pain on the ground. Bedford, 10-9.

2ndRound: Vinicius lands a kick to the groin and time is called. Game on. Bedford picks up right where he left off, flooring Vinicius with a straight right hand. He unloads a kick to the body and some punches on the ground. That’s all she wrote.

Mike Pyle Defeated James Head via TKO (Knee) at 1:55 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Head goes on the attack and catches his opponent with a flurry of punches and a knee to the midsection. Overhand right by Pyle. Head counters with some body shots. Pyle drops him with a knee to the grill while in the clinch. A couple of punches on the ground and the fight is called.

Main Card:


Dustin Poirier Defeated Jonathan Brookins via Submission (D’arce Choke) at 4:15 in the 1stRound

1stRound: They are flinging leather. Brookins is winning the violent exchanges. Poirier appeared rocked for a brief moment. Brookins clocks him again with another right hand. Poirier answers with a right hook. They are clinching against the cage and Poirier knees him in the mug. Poirier momentarily drops him with a right hand. Poirier is starting to tee off now. He slaps a D’arce choke on Brookins. Game over.

Jamie Varner vs. Melvin Guillard*

Pat Barry Defeated Shane Del Rosario via KO (Punches) at :26 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Barry working his leg kicks early. Del Rosario clinches and lands some knees to the thighs. Del Rosario has been working hard for a takedown for much of the round, and finally secures it. He takes Barry’s back and slaps on a rear-naked choke. Barry tries to slip out the backdoor, but almost gave up an armbar. Del Rosario returns to his back. Barry sweeps to take top position just before the bell rings. Del Rosario, 10-9.

2ndRound: Barry clobbers him with a nasty overhand left hand. Del Rosario is tipsy. “HD” goes for the kill and clocks him with a barrage of punches to the grill. One final right hook puts Del Rosario to sleep. That’s all she wrote.

Colton Smith Defeated Mike Ricci via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26) (Smith wins TUF 16 welterweight tournament)

1stRound: Smith is coming out like a six-figure UFC contract is at stake. Oh, wait up… He takes Ricci down and drops several short elbows to his opponent’s head. Ricci fights to his feet, but gets slammed back down. Smith is smothering him against the cage. He takes Ricci’s back and syncs in both hooks. There’s still half the round remaining. Ricci wiggles loose. Smith gets a body lock and drags him back to the canvas. Smith, 10-9.

2ndRound: Ricci takes a kick to the groin, but referee Steve Mazzagatti didn’t see it and allows them to continue fighting. Ricci tried to get a stoppage, though Smith continues his attack. Smith did stop for a moment, but Mazzagatti refused to call time. Smith takes his back and slaps on a rear-naked choke. Ricci slips out the backdoor. Ricci doing a good job of defending. Smith, 10-9.

3rdRound: Ricci needs to go for broke. Instead, he throws some lackluster kicks which allows Smith to charge ahead and take him down again. He’s now taken his back, again, and has over four minutes to work. Crowd is booing for some reason. It’s not Smith’s fault that he’s dominating Ricci… Ricci reverses and nearly pulls a rabbit out of his hat with an armbar submission. Smith gets free and raises his hands in victory after the horn blares. Smith, 10-9, and ran the table, 30-27.

Roy Nelson Defeated Matt Mitrione via TKO (Punches) at 2:58 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Mitrione throws a head kick that allows Nelson to get a hold of his body. Nelson has him clinched against the cage. Mitrione lands an elbow as they separate. Nelson is throwing haymakers. Mitrione is unfazed, continuing to unleash lethal kicks. Nelson floors “Meathead” with a nasty right uppercut. He unloads several more bombs on the canvas until referee Herb Dean pulls him off.
