Affliction middleweight fighter, Vitor Belfort, stated in an interview with the popular Brazilian MMA website, TATAME.com, that he will face Matt Lindland on Affliction’s next promotional event on October 11th at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The interesting thing about Belfort’s statement is that yesterday the California State Athletic Commission had medically suspended him for 180 days due to a broken hand suffered during his victory over Terry Martin at Affliction: Banned. However, the Commission stated that Belfort was suspended for “undisclosed reasons, and could be cleared earlier by an orthopedic doctor.”
“The doctor will analyze it, but I may stay four weeks out,” Belfort told the website. “I’ll come back on October 11th to fight Matt Lindland for the belt.”
The belt that Belfort is referring is the open WAMMA middleweight belt. Currently there is only one WAMMA champion, and that is Fedor Emelianenko in the heavyweight division. Emelianenko won the title at Affliction’s debut promotion.
Affliction Entertainment was unable to confirm that Belfort was going to be competing on their October 11th card, nor that the WAMMA middleweight belt would be on the line.
Thus far, here are the other fighters rumored to be on the card:
Aleksander Emelianenko vs. TBD
Josh Barnett vs. TBD
Tim Sylvia vs TBD
Pedro Rizzo vs. Paul Buentello
Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Tito Ortiz
Andrei Arlovski vs. Fedor Emelianenko
