MMAJunkie.com is reporting that middleweight contenders, Martin Kampmann and Nathan Marquardt, will square off at UFC 88. The event will be held on September 6th at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
According to the website, an official announcement can come as early as next week for the UFC’s debut event in Georgia.
Marquardt, The Jackson Submission Fighter, is coming off a tough Split Decision loss to Thales Leites at UFC 85. The fight was somewhat controversial, as Marquardt dominated much of the matchup, however was docked penalty points on two separate occasions for illegal blows.
One of the deductions was legitimate, as he kneed Leites’ head when Leites’ knees were still on the ground. However, on replay, the second point deduction should not have been called, as it appeared that Marquart’s elbow was to the top of Leites’ head, not to the back of his head.
Kampmann is undefeated in the UFC, with a record of 4-0, 16-2 overall. The most difficult thing that Kampmann has had to deal with is his surgically repaired knee. The knee has caused the 185-pounder to sit out extended periods of time, on multiple occasions.
Kampmann told 5thRound.com that the knee issue will never go away, and it is something that he is just going to have to deal with.
