Nike isn’t simply Jon Jones’ (Pictured) biggest sponsor, their “Just do it” mantra has become a way of life for the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion.
That’s why Jones didn’t bat an eye when Daniel Cormier threatened to “kick his ass” during Saturday’s live Showtime broadcast. While there aren’t many men walking God’s green earth that have dared to challenge Jones, particularly with such pinpoint verbiage, “Bones” wasn’t the least bit fazed by Cormier’s challenge.
Jones merely wants the former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion to “just do it.”
“You know, the guy is a tremendous athlete and I wish he would just do it and just stop talking about it,” Jones said of Cormier on FUEL TV’s UFC Tonight. “I am open to fighting the best guys in the world.”
First things first for both fighters. Jones must successfully defend his throne against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159, while Cormier has to make his big league debut in triumphant fashion against Frank Mir on April 20th.
In addition, Cormier has to shed the excess weight required to hit the 205-pound mark on the scale – something he’s never had to do in 11 professional bouts. Oh yeah, and there’s the minor formality of whether Cormier’s unblemished Strikeforce résumé and a heavyweight win over Mir warrants next dibs at Jones’ light heavyweight crown.
Then again, an unqualified Sonnen got exactly what he wanted by calling Jones out.
