Last week, former light heavyweight champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson revealed the UFC is not allowing him to endorse Reebok in the cage in what appears to be his final fight for the promotion.
The impending free agent didn’t have a firm grasp on why his employer shot down his most mainstream sponsor, particularly since Anderson Silva, Jon Jones and Junior dos Santos are permitted to wear Nike, one of Reebok’s main rivals. Rampage simply added the roadblock to the long list of reasons why he’s done with the UFC after completing his contractual obligations with the organization after Saturday’s scrap against Glover Teixeira.
UFC president Dana White (Pictured) addressed the matter, as well as Rampage’s future, following Wednesday’s UFC 158 press conference in Montreal.
“It’s the same old stuff,” White said of shunning Reebok. “It’s no different than any other sponsorship. We work just like every other league works. You don’t just wear whatever you want, you have to have approved sponsors and they’re not one.”
White didn’t specify why Reebok was left off their exclusive list. Ironically, White, as he’s done countless times in the past, was donning an Adidas sweater and shoes. Adidas bought Reebok in 2006.
In regards to whether Saturday marks Rampage’s Octagon swan song, White wasn’t completely sure. Although, he was certain the UFC has always done right by Rampage.
“I don’t know, we’ll see what happens,” White stated. “I gotta answer this question the way I answer all the Rampage Jackson questions, you never know where you are with the guy. If you ask me, do I think we’ve treated Rampage Jackson well? I think we’ve been great to Rampage Jackson. Financially, personally, professionally and every other way you can be cool to a guy.
“He doesn’t feel that way. … at the end of the day, any job you have, I don’t care what you do for a living, you have to be happy with what you’re doing and be happy with the people you’re doing it with. And if Rampage isn’t happy with us, then what are we going to do? The guy needs to go somewhere with people that are gonna make him happy.”
