As expected, Vitor Belfort (Pictured) will not get his wish to replace Chael Sonnen and challenge light heavyweight king Jon Jones for his throne. If UFC president Dana White gets his way, Belfort will welcome former Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold to the big leagues.
“We have a fight for [Vitor]. I think it is Rockhold,” White tried to remember following Thursday’s “UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Dodson” press conference in Chicago. “It may be Rockhold. Yeah, I think that’s it. That’s who we’re talking about.”
Belfort is just six days removed from his highlight reel TKO victory over Michael Bisping. “The Phenom” has won eight of his past 10 fights, with the lone blemishes during his current run coming to middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Jones, respectively.
Rockhold was perfect through his nine scraps under Strikeforce en route to capturing the middleweight crown. The 28-year-old was last seen posting a unanimous decision win against Tim Kennedy in July.
He was supposed to defend his belt against Lorenz Larkin in November and again in January, but Rockhold was forced to withdraw on both occasions with a wrist injury.
White did not confirm when he would like for the 185-pounders to collide.
