UFC Alistair Overeem

As expected, Alistair Overeem (Pictured) will find himself in the exact same place he was one year ago if he beats Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva on Saturday. UFC president Dana White confirmed during Thursday’s media gathering that the former Strikeforce heavyweight champ will get first dibs at Cain Velasquez’s crown if he’s victorious at UFC 156.

White didn’t say what would be in store for Bigfoot if he gets his hand raised, but a title fight is highly unlikely.

Overeem was set to challenge then-champion Junior dos Santos for his hardware at UFC 146 until “The Demolition Man” destroyed the highly-anticipated shootout by flunking a random pre-fight drug test.

The 32-year-old subsequently lost his appeal against the Nevada State Athletic Commission and was levied a nine-month suspension for registering more than double the permitted limit of testosterone in his system.

Prior to getting banned, Overeem solidified his top contender status by steamrolling Brock Lesnar at UFC 141. That December 2011 bout marks his only fight for the UFC.

If you were to ask the Gambling Gods, Overeem is a lock to challenge Velasquez for his crown. He’s pegged as nearly a 4-to-1 odds-on favorite to trounce Bigfoot.

UFC 156 takes pace inside Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The heavyweight shootout co-headlines the pay-per-view broadcast.
