Chael Sonnen (Pictured) wasn’t the first mixed martial artist to disclose his use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), but he certainly is the one who put the controversial treatment on the map after flunking his UFC 117 drug test.
Since Sonnen registered more than four times the level of testosterone permitted by athletic commissions, it has been revealed fellow UFC stars Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (recently became a free agent), Forrest Griffin, Frank Mir and Vitor Belfort are also on TRT.
The cheater’s handbook for TRT suggests athletes are manipulating the regimen while preparing for a fight. They will jack up their testosterone levels beyond normal ranges in order to push their bodies to its outermost limit. As showtime steadily approaches, they will then taper off the treatment to get their testosterone back to a natural level – therefore, no flunked drug tests.
With the medically-prescribed treatment running rampant in MMA, UFC President Dana White professed he will start to crack down hard on fighters taking TRT. Last weekend, White claimed the promotion will begin to randomly “test the [expletive] out of them all through training camp.”
Sonnen, for one, can attest that White wasn’t bluffing. He’s already been asked to provide a urinalysis. Uncle Chael also commends his boss for trying to clean up the sport.
“First off, I admire Dana on many levels,” Sonnen stated on FUEL TV’s UFC Tonight. “But for me, this is his crowning moment, both as a leader, but also with his integrity. You are never going to find a chief executive of any corporation, be it sport, business or otherwise that shines a light on his own organization and says, ‘We have a problem.’
“Guys, we’re not talking about testosterone use, we’re talking about testosterone abuse. The testing has already started. I can tell you firsthand, I have already been tested since this announcement.”
Sonnen has long claimed he must take TRT, otherwise he would “die.”
The 35-year-old challenges reigning light heavyweight king Jon Jones for his crown on April 27th. We’ll see how many more times Sonnen will be screened ahead of UFC 159.
