The employment news hasn’t been all bad for American Kickboxing Academy this week. Despite seeing teammate Jon Fitch get cut from the UFC on Wednesday, heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (Pictured) was rewarded with an eight-fight contract extension to remain with the planet’s premier mixed martial arts promotion.
Velasquez still had three scraps remaining on his previous deal with the UFC.
“We always try to do the right thing,” UFC President Dana White said following Thursday’s press conference. “I have three fights left with Cain Velasquez. We just signed a new eight-fight deal with Cain. We re-signed him. I didn’t have to do that. He deserved it and we did it.”
Velasquez owns a practically perfect 11-1 professional record. His last 10 fights have been under the UFC banner.
The 30-year-old avenged the lone blemish on his résumé by steamrolling Junior dos Santos to reclaim the throne.
