UFC president Dana White has confirmed with USAToday that a light heavyweight rematch between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (pictured) and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will go down at UFC 161.
The June 15 event takes place inside MTS Centre in Winnipeg. The card marks the Octagon’s debut in the Canadian province of Manitoba.
In addition, another 205-pound scrap with Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans could be added to the lineup. However, White said Hendo’s participation will depend upon receiving medical clearance on his right hand.
The 42-year-old was issued a six-month suspension for his haymaker following last month’s loss to Lyoto Machida. Henderson can return to action sooner with a doctor’s note.
Evans will be looking to bounce back from back-to-back defeats. “Suga” has dropped consecutive decisions to reigning light heavyweight king Jon Jones and Nogueira, respectively.
Meanwhile, Shogun and Nogueira rekindle a rivalry that began in 2005 when the icons squared off in the quarterfinals of PRIDE’s Middleweight Grand Prix. Shogun beat “Little Nog” en route to taking the 16-man tourney.
No other bouts have been confirmed for the show at this time.
