A slew of fights were announced for UFC 161 on Tuesday, but the show’s featured attraction remained a mystery. Until now.
UFC president Dana White confirmed Wednesday with ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto that interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao (pictured) will defend his crown against Eddie Wineland in the card’s main event.
MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Canada hosts the June 15 festivities.
Barao successfully defended his title by submitting up-and-coming Michael McDonald last month at UFC on FUEL TV 7. The Brazilian captured the vacant manufactured belt the bout prior by beating Urijah Faber.
Wineland, meanwhile, earned his crack at the throne on the strength of back-to-back victories. He most recently posted a split decision win over Brad Pickett at UFC 155.
White was hoping bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz would be back this summer to face Barao in a title unification bout, but it appears “The Dominator’s” surgically repaired knee is not cooperating.
Here is the show’s updated lineup:
Roland Delorme vs. TBD
Soa Palelei vs. Stipe Miocic
Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Dan Henderson vs. Rashad Evans
Eddie Wineland vs. Renan Barao (UFC bantamweight champion)
