The most anticipated welterweight title tilt in mixed martial arts history is set to go off in three days when Georges St-Pierre defends his throne against Nick Diaz at UFC 158, but that didn’t stop the planet’s premier MMA promotion from announcing a thrilling featherweight affair between “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (pictured) and Ricardo Lamas.
The 145-pounders will collide July 6 at UFC 162.
Jung will be riding a three-fight winning streak into the pivotal shootout. However, the popular submission specialist has been mending his injured shoulder since upsetting Dustin Poirier last May.
Lamas, meanwhile, if perfect through is past four fights. “The Bully” hoped he had earned a shot at Jose Aldo’s crown after beating Erik Koch in January, but it appears Lamas will have to notch at least one more impressive victory before sniffing a championship bout.
MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada hosts the festivities. A middleweight title bout between champion Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman headlines the pay-per-view broadcast.
Here are the athletes expected to perform on Fourth of July weekend:
Seth Baczynski vs. Brian Melancon
Chris Leben vs. Andrew Craig
Ricardo Lamas vs. “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung
Mark Munoz vs. Tim Boetsch
Roger Gracie vs. Tim Kennedy
Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva (UFC middleweight champion)
