As anticipated, the Swedish Mixed Martial Arts Federation will not clear Alexander Gustafsson (pictured) to fight Gegard Mousasi Saturday at UFC on FUEL TV 9 due to a cut the light heavyweight recently suffered during training.
“As it is clear that Alexander Gustafsson will not be fit to compete as planned and cannot be medically cleared on Friday the 5th of April, the SMMAF Medical Committee has today decided that Alexander Gustafsson will not be allowed to participate in the planned match on April 6,” SMMAF’s statement read.
However, here is the most interesting part of the committee’s press release … “bearing in mind that a correct medical examination that met the regulatory demands has been performed, nothing in the SMMAF regulations hinders the SMMAF Medical Committee from making a decision to stop Gustafsson from competing.”
Therefore, the UFC and Gustafsson will determine whether Saturday’s main event against Mousasi will go on as planned. The promotion would clearly like to keep “The Mauler” in the matchup for obvious reasons, and Gustafsson has stated he still wants to scrap despite the laceration below his left eyebrow, but safety is certainly a concern.
Mousasi said on “The MMA Hour” Monday that he would target the wound if Gustafsson kept their appointment. That’s not dirty, it’s smart.
If the UFC wisely decides to shelve the shootout for another day, as the bout order currently stands, the lightweight tango between Ryan Couture and Ross Pearson will headline Saturday’s gig.
The UFC has yet to address the SMMAF’s decision.
Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden serves as host.
