‘The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

“The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale” took place Saturday inside Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

A bantamweight brawl between Urijah Faber and Scott Jorgensen headlined tonight’s show. Also, Kelvin Gastelum and Uriah Hall met in the TUF 17 finals.

The tournament winner took home a six-figure UFC contract.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Daniel Pineda Defeats Justin Lawrence via Submission (Kimura) at 1:35 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Pineda scores a takedown within seconds. Lawrence gets to his feet for a brief moment, then gets tripped right back down. Pineda lands in side control. Pineda working for a kimura. Lawrence fought him off for as long as he could, but is ultimately forced to cry uncle. 

Maximo Blanco Defeats Sam Sicilia via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Blanco slips on a head kick, though is able to secure a momentary takedown. Sicilia starting to open things up, as it appears he’s found his range. They exchange leg kicks. Blanco scoring with his jab. Close round. Sicilia, 10-9.

2ndRound: Sicilia comes with a flurry and rocks him with a right hand. He’s trying to drag him to the mat, but it appears Blanco has recovered. Referee Kim Winslow has warned Blanco numerous times to not grab the fence (deduct a point then?). Blanco has turned the tables is unloading bombs. He plants Sicilia on his back and ends up in full mount. Sicilia fights free. Uppercut by Sicilia. Blanco returns fire with a few unanswered punches. Blanco, 10-9.

3rdRound: Blanco comes out like a house of fire and nails him with a big right. Sicilia appeared wobbly for a moment. Sicilia rocks him with a right hoot. They are exchanging leather in the pocket. Thrilling scrap thus far. Blanco jumps on his back after a scramble. They are back to their feet. Blanco thwarts a takedown attempt. This decision is going to be interesting. Blanco, 10-9, and possibly won, 29-28.

 Cole Miller Defeats Bart Palaszewski via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 4:23 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Miller working his jab early. Palaszewski charges forward with a flurry of punches. He landed a right hand that appeared to stun Miller. They exchange leg kicks. Miller takes him to the mat. He jumps on Palaszewski’s back. Miller slaps on a rear-naked choke. It’s a wrap.

Clint Hester Defeats Bristol Marunde via TKO (Elbow) at 3:53 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Not much action in the opening minutes. Crowd starts to boo. Marunde tags him with a right uppercut. He follows up with a jab. Marunde catches a kick and puts Hester on his back. Hester fights free and unloads a bomb that drops Marunde. He punches, but the round comes to an end. Hester, 10-9.

2ndRound: The nerves appear to have disappeared, as both are starting to open up. Hester is much more aggressive with his attack. Marunde closes the distance and puts his opponent on his back. Hester wobbles him with an upkick and gets to his feet. Hester tags him with a one-two combination. Hester, 10-9.

3rdRound: Marunde dives for a single-leg takedown to no avail. Hester unleashes a flying knee to the chest. Hester scoring big in the clinch. Hester fires off a standing elbow that knocks Marunde unconcious. Game. Set. Match, Hester.

Dylan Andrews Defeats Jimmy Quinlan via TKO (Punches) at 3:22 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Quinlan working hard for a takedown. After clinching against the fence for more than two minutes, Quinlan finally plants him on the canvas. Andrews fights loose, but is pressed against the cage again. Quinlan dives for another takedown, but is met with a vicious right hook. Andrews is pounding on his dome. It’s over.

Luke Barnatt Defeats Collin Hart via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

1stRound: Hart comes out firing early. Barnatt hasn’t been able to use his reach advantage. Barnatt takes an accidental kick to the groin and time is called. Game on. Hart tags him with a left hook and gets a hold of a body lock. He slams Barnatt to the canvas. Barnatt gets to his feet, but Hart is draped all over him. Barnatt separates and is starting to find his groove. Hart’s face is bloodied. Exciting round. Hart, 10-9.

2ndRound: Hart is scoring with combinations seemingly at will. Barnatt connects with a knee to the midsection while in the clinch. Hart lands some body shots. Barnatt doing a good job of diversifying his strikes. Barnatt goes for a kimura and after a scramble he catches Hart in a standing guillotine. Hart wiggles loose. Barnatt slips on a head kick and Hart pounces, but the bell blares before he can do anything. Both guys appear winded heading back to their corners. Hart, 10-9.

3rdRound: Hart has been the more aggressive fighter all night. These guys seem to be moving in slow motion. Hart takes his back and scores a brief takedown. Barnatt continues to pelt his opponent with his long jab. Hart eats a right hand. Hart secures a takedown just before the final horn sounds. This decision will be interesting. Barnatt, 10-9, but likely lost, 29-28.

Josh Samman Defeats Kevin Casey via TKO (Strikes) at 2:17 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Wild scramble early that leads to Casey catching him in a triangle choke. Samman rolls all over the mat trying to fight free. Casey switches to a straight armbar and Samman picks him up and slams him on his head twice to get free. Casey scores a takedown. Solid ground-and-pound by Casey. Samman fights free and is landing knees in the clinch. Casey, 10-9.

2ndRound: Samman immediately picks up where he left off, unloading knees in the clinch. Curious if Casey gassed with his fast assault. Samman is doing work in the clinch. Casey sporting a huge welt on the right side of his forehead. Samman drops him with some strikes and the scrap is called.

Bubba McDaniel Defeats Gilbert Smith via Submission (Triangle Choke) at 2:49 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: McDaniel charges forward and has him clinched against the cage. Smith eats a couple of strikes as they separate. Smith catches a kick and scores a takedown. McDaniel reverses and is in top position. Smith sweeps and regains control on the ground. McDaniel fights to his feet, but gets planted right back down. Repeat. McDaniel slaps on a guillotine choke, then lets go to get on top. He transitions to side control. McDaniel lands some knees to the body before the bell rings. McDaniel, 10-9.

2ndRound: McDaniel scores with a one-two combo. Smith answers back with a straight right and has him pressed against the fence. McDaniel lands a knee to the dome in the clinch. Smith locks in an arm-in guillotine, but McDaniel escapes and is on top. McDaniel takes his back and is punish his noggin with punches. Smith appears gassed. McDaniel, 10-9.

3rdRound: McDaniel opens the final stanza with two unanswered lefts. He easily secures a takedown. McDaniel transitions to his back. Smith reversed, but gets caught in a triangle choke. McDaniel switches to a straight armbar and Smith is forced to call it quits.

Travis Browne Defeats Gabriel Gonzaga via TKO (Elbows) at 1:11 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Browne whiffs on a head kick and Gonzaga has him clinched against the cage. Gonzaga continues to go for a single-leg takedown and Browne makes him pay with countless elbows to the dome. Gonzaga is face planted on the canvas. That’s all she wrote.

Cat Zingano Defeats Miesha Tate via TKO (Strikes) at 2:55 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Tate charges forward and takes her down for a split second. Tate has her pressed against the fence, but Zingano slaps on a standing guillotine choke. Tate uses a trip to get free and comes out firing. Zingano loses an exchange and gets taken down. Tate lands in side control, but Zingano reverses. Tate wiggles free and nails her with several bombs. Tate picks her up and slams her to the mat. Tate dropping short elbows. Tate, 10-9.

2ndRound: Zingano tires a flying knee to start things off. Tate scores another takedown with 30 seconds. Tate trying to advance to full mount and is dropping punches in the meantime. She tries an armbar, but Zingano escapes. Tate moves to full mount for a moment. Tate goes for a leg lock. Zingano gets on top and is unleashing elbows. More ground-and-pound by Zingano. Another thrilling round. Tate, 10-9.

3rdRound: Zingano secures a takedown. Zingano scoring with solid GnP. She’s smothering Tate on the mat. Tate is bleeding from her nose.  Tate tries to get to her feet, but eats a knee to the side of the head and drops back down. Zingano unloads more brutal knees and an elbow to the grill and Tate falls for the last time. Great rally by the mom.

Kelvin Gastelum Defeats Uriah Hall via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) (Gastelum takes TUF 17 tournament)

1stRound: Hall has his hands down, daring Gastelum to swing. Gastelum obliges and tags him a couple times. He has Hall clinched against the cage. They separate and Gastelum rocks Hall with a big left hand. Hall appears to have recovered, but gets planted on his back. Good activity by Gastelum. Hall fights to his feet. Hall charges forward for a brief takedown. Gastelum, 10-9.

2ndRound: Hall opening up his arsenal now. He keeps dropping his hands teasing Gastelum to engage. Gastelum scores another takedown. Hall reverses. Gastelum gets up, but eats a knee to the midsection for his troubles. Hall takes him down and lands in side control. Just when Gastelum gets to his feet, Hall suplexes to the mat. Hall, 10-9.

3rdRound: Hall lands a knee to the groin and time is called. Game on. Gastelum gets a takedown, but Hall quickly reverses and lands some strikes. They’re back to their feet. Gastelum has him clinched against the cage. Overhand left by Gastelum. This fight is up for grabs with 90 ticks remaining. Gastelum lands a critical takedown. Hall connects with punches from the bottom. Gastelum attempts an armbar just as the horn blares. Wow. Gastelum, 10-9, and likely won, 29-28.

Urijah Faber Defeats Scott Jorgensen via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 3:16 in the 4thRound

1stRound: They clinch against the cage. Jorgensen trips him to the mat. Faber gets to his feet, but Jorgensen is draped all over his back. Faber reverses position and scores a takedown of his own. He tries to take Jorgensen’s back and loses position. They are back standing. Faber connects with a big knee to the midsection and takes Jorgensen’s back. He slaps on a body triangle. Faber is all over him. Faber going for a guillotine, though Jorgensen is doing a great job of defending. Faber, 10-9.

2ndRound: Jorgensen takes a kick to the groin and time is called. Game on. Faber is simply a step ahead. Knee to the sternum and left hook by Faber. Jorgensen scrambles free. “Young Guns” finds his range and scores with some hands. Faber, 10-9.

3rdRound: Jorgensen making his a more competitive fight now. Faber responds with a flurry, topped off with a right to the dome. Pace has slowed quite a bit. They exchange blows in the pocket. Faber slips and Jorgensen jumps on his back. Faber gets loose, but eats a right hand. Faber scores a big double-leg takedown to end the round. Jorgensen, 10-9.

4thRound: Much quicker page to start things off. They are exchanging in the pocket. Jorgensen tags him with a short elbow. Faber gets a takedown and immediately jumps on his back. He locks in a body triangle and quickly slaps on a rear-naked choke. Game over.
